Matango

A group of wealthy Tokyo vacationers set out on a sailing trip, hoping to leave the city and its pressures behind. A sudden storm damages the yacht, leaving the mast broken, the engine dead and the radio silent. The drifting boat eventually reaches what appears to be a deserted tropical island near the equator. Among the survivors is Professor Kenji Murai, along with a singer, a skipper, a sailor, a writer and the yacht's owner.

The castaways find almost no edible food or fresh water, but they do discover wreckage from earlier ships, along with a fungus-covered hull they use for shelter while they try to repair the yacht. As hunger and tension grow, the group begins to argue over the remaining rations, and some of them eat the strange mushrooms spreading across the island and the wreckage. They come to realize that something hostile is present on the island.

Ishirō Honda directed the film, working from a screenplay by Takeshi Kimura. It was released in 1963 and stands as the fourteenth of the twenty-five films Honda directed in chronological order; it followed Atragon the same year and preceded Mothra vs. Godzilla in 1964. Akira Kubo, Kumi Mizuno, Hiroshi Koizumi, Kenji Sahara, Hiroshi Tachikawa and Yoshio Tsuchiya appear among a credited cast of twenty-five. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it rates 6.7 from roughly 107 votes.
