A real estate office employee, Marion Crane, takes a large sum of cash from her employer and leaves town, hoping to start over with the man she has been seeing. She checks into an isolated roadside motel run by a young man named Norman Bates, who lives in the house beside it with his mother. What begins as a quiet overnight stop turns into something far more disturbing.
Alfred Hitchcock directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Joseph Stefano. It was released in 1960 and followed North by Northwest the year before; it is the thirty-sixth of the forty-three films he directed in chronological order, with The Birds coming three years later. Anthony Perkins plays Norman Bates, Janet Leigh plays Marion Crane, and Vera Miles, John Gavin, Martin Balsam and John McIntire appear among the credited cast of thirty-four.
On a budget typical of its era, the film took about 50 million dollars worldwide, a strong return that reflects its enduring draw. Audiences rate it highly: 8.4 out of 10 on TMDB from more than eleven thousand votes, while critics are more enthusiastic still, giving it 9.6 out of 10 across 118 reviews, a wider gap between professional and general opinion than is common.
