Bombshell
Short description
Bombshell dramatizes the sexual harassment scandal that shook Fox News in 2016. At the centre is Roger Ailes, the network's powerful founder, whose behaviour toward the women who work for him goes unchallenged for years. When star anchor Megyn Kelly clashes publicly with presidential candidate Donald Trump, she finds no support from above. Her colleague Gretchen Carlson, meanwhile, refuses to keep playing the role the channel expects of her, and her contract is not renewed. A younger staff member, Kayla Pospisil, rises through the ranks after a meeting behind Ailes's closed office door. When Carlson sues her boss for sexual harassment, the women at the network must decide whether to speak out as well. The film is based on real events.
Jay Roach directed, working from a screenplay by Charles Randolph; Roach also produced alongside Charlize Theron and A.J. Dix. It is Roach's thirteenth film as director, following All the Way and preceding The Roses. Theron plays Megyn Kelly, Margot Robbie plays Kayla Pospisil, Nicole Kidman plays Gretchen Carlson and John Lithgow plays Roger Ailes, with Allison Janney and Malcolm McDowell among a large credited cast. Made for a budget of about 32 million dollars, it took roughly 61 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 136,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from over 3,000, broadly in line with its critics' rating of 6.6 from 350 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- For the film, Charlize Theron persuaded retired makeup artist Kazu Hiro to temporarily return to work.
- The scene in which John Lithgow's character asks Margot Robbie's character to lift her skirt was filmed with numerous cameras from every possible angle. Director Jay Roach didn't want Robbie to have to perform the scene over and over again.
- To work on the film, Charlize Theron personally persuaded makeup artist Katsuhiro, who had already retired, to temporarily return to the profession. He received his second Academy Award for his work on this film. He received his first for his work on Joe Wright's drama "Darkest Hour" (2017), where he did makeup for Gary Oldman's role as Winston Churchill (1874-1965).
