Short description
A group of maverick scientists on a remote Australian sheep farm are the globe's only hope for obtaining the epic images of man's first steps on the moon.
What's left behind the scenes
- All interior shots were filmed in studio pavilions, while exterior scenes were shot on location near the Parkes Radio Observatory, which was closed for three weeks for the filmmakers.
- Due to strong winds, the dish had to be constantly adjusted to ensure it was pointed exactly at the Moon. This task was handled by the character played by Kevin Harrington.
- As Cliff Buxton (played by Sam Neill) mentioned, the technical staff really did sometimes ride on the dish when it moved. However, no one actually played cricket there, despite the scene appearing in the movie.
- The sets for the central control room looked authentic. They even included some actual NASA instruments and equipment, which proved to be too bulky to ship back to the United States. When actual observatory employees visited the set, they said it felt as if they had stepped back in time.
