The Night Clerk is a crime drama centred on Bart Bromley, a young autistic man who works the night shift at a hotel. Highly intelligent but uneasy in social situations, he uses hidden cameras in the guests' rooms to study their behaviour and rehearse the way he interacts with them. When a woman is murdered during one of his shifts, the police investigation turns on Bart, and he is unwilling to hand over the recordings that might clear him. At the same time he forms a personal connection with a guest named Andrea, and comes to believe the real killer is still at large and may target her next.
Michael Cristofer directed and wrote the film, which sits between Original Sin (2001) and The Great Lillian Hall (2024) among the features he has directed, and it was produced by Arianne Fraser, Tye Sheridan and David M. Wulf. Sheridan plays Bart, with Ana de Armas as Andrea, John Leguizamo as Detective Espada and Helen Hunt as Ethel Bromley. Among the 23 credited cast and 47 credited crew, the production was backed by Saban Films, Highland Film Group, WulfPak Productions and Convergent Media.
Released in February 2020 and running 90 minutes, the film drew a divided response. Critics were largely dismissive, with a critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 44 reviews. On IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 out of 10 from 933 votes, a slightly warmer but still moderate audience verdict.
