After the Wedding

Isabelle has devoted her life to running an orphanage in Kolkata that is running out of money. Word arrives that a wealthy American businesswoman is considering a substantial donation, but only if Isabelle comes to New York to meet her in person. The benefactor is Theresa, a media executive with a successful career and a family preparing for a wedding. Once Isabelle arrives, the trip forces her to face a past she had left behind, and the encounter unsettles the lives of everyone involved.

Bart Freundlich wrote and directed this 2019 drama, his fifth feature after World Traveler, Catch That Kid, The Rebound and Wolves. He also produced alongside Julianne Moore and Joel B. Michaels. Moore plays Theresa, with Michelle Williams as Isabel, Billy Crudup as Oscar and Abby Quinn as Grace; roughly thirty credited cast members and sixty-two credited crew worked on the production, which was mounted by a group of independent companies.

The film received a limited theatrical run starting in August 2019 and took in about three million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a drama with this cast. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 rating from around 9,200 votes, and on TMDB a 6.4 from roughly 261 votes, suggesting a small but generally favourable audience response. A critics' rating of 5.8 from 159 reviews sits slightly below those audience scores.
