Brightburn

Brightburn centers on Tori and Kyle Breyer, a farming couple in a small Kansas town who have been unable to have a child of their own. A spacecraft crashes near their property carrying an infant, and they raise the boy, Brandon, as their son. He grows up quiet and academically capable, but as he approaches adolescence his behavior changes abruptly and unusual abilities begin to surface, leading his parents to question what they have brought into their home and what he is becoming.

The film is a horror-tinged reworking of the familiar superhero origin, directed by David Yarovesky from a screenplay by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and produced by James Gunn. Elizabeth Banks and David Denman play the adoptive parents, with Jackson A. Dunn as Brandon and Matt Jones, Meredith Hagner and Becky Wahlstrom in supporting roles. It was Yarovesky's first feature as director, followed later by Nightbooks and Locked.

Made for about 6 million dollars, Brightburn took in roughly 33 million worldwide. Audience response has been moderate on both IMDb, where it holds 6.1 from about 121,000 votes, and TMDB, where it sits at 6.2 from around 3,600 votes. The critics' score of 5.7 from 206 reviews places it close to the audience ratings, with neither group embracing it strongly.
