Set in Czechoslovakia at the turn of the twentieth century, Morgiana follows two sisters after their father's death. Klara, the younger, inherits the family castle and most of the estate; she is beautiful, well liked and kind. Viktoria, her elder sister, receives only a small house and a chest of jewellery, and resents the arrangement bitterly. Dressed in dark clothes and consumed by envy, Viktoria resolves to remove Klara, obtaining a poison that works slowly and dosing her sister's tea. As Klara weakens, Viktoria's position unravels through guilt, blackmail and the growing need to silence anyone who might expose her. The only creature she genuinely cares for is her Siamese cat, Morgiana.
Juraj Herz directed and co-wrote the film with Vladimír Bor, following his 1969 feature The Cremator. Iva Janžurová plays both sisters, with Josef Abrhám, Nina Divíšková, Petr Čepek, Josef Somr and Jiří Kodet among the credited cast of twenty-three. Made by Filmové studio Barrandov, it runs 106 minutes and blends drama, horror and mystery.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from around 1,900 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7.2 from a much smaller number of votes. The two audiences agree closely on the film's merits.
