The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One

The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One is a drama that continues the story told in The Passion of the Christ, focusing on the period between the crucifixion and the resurrection. The narrative follows the events that took place over three days, when Jesus is said to have descended into the realm of the dead to preach and raise the saints of the Old Testament. It is the first half of a two-part continuation, and further story details have not been set out.

Mel Gibson directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Randall Wallace and Donal Gibson, and he produces alongside Bruce Davey. The film is the seventh in Gibson's directing career, following a line of work that includes The Man Without a Face, Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto, Hacksaw Ridge and Flight Risk, and it arrives before a second part scheduled for 2028. Jaakko Ohtonen plays Jesus, with Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, Kasia Smutniak as Mary, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter, Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate and Rupert Everett as Abraham.

The production is backed by Lionsgate and Icon Productions on a budget of 250 million US dollars. The film is not yet released, with a release date set for 6 May 2027.
