Child's Play
Short description
Child's Play is a 2019 horror film about Karen, a single mother who has just moved with her teenage son Andy into a new apartment building. Andy has trouble settling in and making friends, so Karen gives him a Buddi doll for his birthday, a high-tech toy made by the Kaslan corporation that can connect to and control other Kaslan devices. She does not know that the doll's safety restrictions have been disabled by a disgruntled factory worker. The doll names itself Chucky and sets out to become Andy's best friend, pursuing that goal far beyond anything Andy or Karen expected, while a detective in the building investigates a series of deaths.
The film was directed by Lars Klevberg, following his earlier Polaroid features, from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith. Gabriel Bateman plays Andy and Aubrey Plaza plays Karen, with Mark Hamill providing the voice of Chucky. Brian Tyree Henry appears as Mike, Tim Matheson as Henry Kaslan and Beatrice Kitsos as Falyn. It is a contemporary reworking of the 1988 film of the same name.
Made on a budget of about 10 million dollars, it took roughly 45 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 60,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from about 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 208 reviews places it close to both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- In one scene, a toy police car says, "Dead or alive, you're coming with me." This is a reference to Paul Verhoeven's *RoboCop* (1987).
- The creators of the original Chucky (and all the sequels up to that point) decided to release a limited-series television show to continue the established storyline. They decided against releasing a standard remake due to a lack of interest in doing so. Therefore, the franchise name is the only thing connecting this film to the others.
- The creator of the franchise, Don Mancini, had no involvement with this film. He, along with actors Jennifer Tilly, Alex Vincent, and Christine Elise, immediately declined to participate in its creation.
- The film tells about Andy’s father and Karen’s husband. It reveals details that were not included in Tom Holland’s original “Child’s Play” (1988), including a scene where Andy Barclay, played by Alex Vincent, shows Chucky a framed photograph of his father and says he died in a car accident.
