Short description
Upgrade is set in a near-future world where technology has worked its way into nearly every part of daily life. Grey Trace is one of the few people who still prefers working with his hands, restoring and repairing old cars. After an attack that kills his wife and leaves him paralyzed from the neck down, a wealthy inventor offers him an experimental implant called STEM, a chip with artificial intelligence that restores his mobility and gives him physical abilities far beyond the normal. Grey uses those abilities to go after the people responsible for what happened to him.
The film was directed by Leigh Whannell, who also wrote the screenplay, placing it between Insidious: Chapter 3 and The Invisible Man in his directorial work. Logan Marshall-Green plays Grey Trace, with Betty Gabriel as Detective Cortez, Harrison Gilbertson as Eron Keen, Melanie Vallejo as Asha Trace, Benedict Hardie as Fisk and Linda Cropper as Pamela.
Released in 2018, Upgrade cost about 3 million dollars and took roughly 17 million dollars worldwide. It holds a 7.5 rating on IMDb from around 232,000 votes and a 7.5 on TMDB from about 5,261 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.3 from 190 reviews, showing broad agreement across audiences and critics.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the fight scenes, the camera often tracked Gray's every move. According to the director, actor Logan Marshall-Green had a cell phone with him that was connected to the camera.
- When Jay searches the tenant list for a phone number to call hacker Jay, it is shown that one of the residents is J. Wan. This is a reference to director James Wan. Whannell and Wan both began their careers in film together. They co-wrote scripts for the 'Saw' franchise films, which Wan directed and in which Whannell acted, and also worked on 'Dead Silence' (2006) and 'Insidious' (2010).
- When Jay searches for a resident's name in the list, it is visible that one of the residents is J. Wan. This is a reference to director James Wan. Wan and Leigh Whannell started their careers in film together.
- Among the number groups that Stem asks Gray to write down is 23.976. This is a reference to the standard frame rate in cinema.
