Short description

Cheyenne was once a famous rock star, and at fifty he still looks the part, with his gothic appearance and pale makeup. He lives quietly in Dublin on his royalties with his wife Jane, drifting between boredom and melancholy. When his father dies, a man he had not spoken to in decades, Cheyenne travels to New York and learns that his father had spent his final years obsessed with a humiliation he had suffered. Cheyenne takes up that unfinished search, hunting for an elderly former Nazi war criminal who has found refuge in the United States. The pursuit carries him across America and forces him to weigh what he is really after.

Paolo Sorrentino directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Umberto Contarello. It followed his earlier features The Consequences of Love and Il Divo, and came before The Great Beauty, Youth and The Hand of God, among the eleven further films credited to him. Sean Penn plays Cheyenne, and the cast includes Eve Hewson as Mary, Olwen Fouéré, Johnny Ward, Sam Keeley and Danielle O'Brien, with 44 credited performers and 42 credited crew members. The production was a Belgian, Irish, Italian and French co-production backed in part by Canal+, CinéCinéma, Element Pictures and Eurimages, made for a budget of 25 million USD and taking about 12 million USD worldwide, so it did not recover its cost at the box office. On IMDb it holds 6.7/10 from around 39,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7/10 from 1,326 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When the protagonist in the film talks to David Byrne, he mentions the suicide of two teenagers who were his fans. This episode references an incident that occurred in 1985 in Reno, where two young men named Raymond Belknap and James Vance committed suicide after hearing songs by the band Judas Priest.
