Short description
The sleepy town of Centerville becomes the setting for a zombie outbreak in Jim Jarmusch's comedy horror film The Dead Don't Die. Strange events unsettle the community: daylight arrives at unpredictable hours, the moon hangs in the sky, and animals behave oddly. Scientists and news reports offer little explanation, and soon the dead rise from their graves and attack the living. Police chief Cliff Robertson, his colleague Ronnie Peterson, officer Mindy Morrison, and the peculiar mortuary worker Zelda Winston are among those trying to protect the town and survive. The film blends horror with deadpan comedy and crime drama elements, and Jarmusch wrote the screenplay as well as directing.
The cast includes Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Chloë Sevigny and Tilda Swinton, alongside Caleb Landry Jones and Tom Waits, with 61 credited cast members and 309 credited crew. It was produced by Joshua Astrachan and Carter Logan, and made in the United States, Sweden and Japan.
Released in 2019, the film runs 104 minutes. It is the thirteenth of the fourteen features Jarmusch has directed in chronological order, following Paterson and preceding Father Mother Sister Brother. Made for a budget of 11 million dollars, it took about 15 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from around 102,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 from 2,939 votes; a critics' rating stands at 5.8 from 319 reviews, slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- When three police officers drive to the cemetery, Ronnie Peterson, played by Adam Driver, leans out of the car window and decapitates one of the zombies. This zombie is dressed in the clothes of a character played by Bill Murray in Ruben Fleischer's 2009 horror-comedy "Zombieland", and his hairstyle is exactly like Murray's.
- Tilda Swinton (who played Zelda Winston) suggested to director and screenwriter Jim Jarmusch the idea of making a film about zombies during the filming of the fantasy thriller "Only Lovers Left Alive" (Jim Jarmusch, 2013).
- Initially, Jim Jarmusch wanted to cast Bruce Campbell as Mallory O'Brien, but he declined. It was then decided to rewrite the role for a woman, and Jarmusch offered it to Carol Kane, whom he had known since filming with Alexander Rockwell on the 1992 comedy-drama *Soup*. Kane did not object.
- The giant anthills shown in the film are real, not props, and were discovered by chance while filming a scene with Tom Waits in the forest. Jarmusch liked them so much that he added a corresponding scene to the script.
