Brian Banks is a drama based on the true story of a young American football player whose path to a professional career was cut short when a former classmate accused him of rape. Despite maintaining his innocence, he was convicted and spent years in prison and on supervised release. The film follows his long effort to clear his name, aided by a lawyer and an organisation that works on behalf of people who have been wrongfully convicted.
Tom Shadyac directed the film, which came after a run of comedies including Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty, and after the documentary I Am. It is his eighth directed feature. Doug Atchison wrote the screenplay, and Aldis Hodge plays Brian Banks, with Greg Kinnear as Justin Brooks, Tiffany Dupont as Alissa Bjerkhoel, Sherri Shepherd as Leomia, Melanie Liburd as Karina and Dorian Missick as Mick Randolph. Monica Levinson, Amy Baer and Shivani Rawat produced.
Made for about 10 million US dollars, the film took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide, a modest return against its cost. Audiences rate it at 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb, from around eight thousand votes, and also 7.2 out of 10 on TMDB, though from a much smaller number of votes. The matching scores suggest a generally favourable response from those who have seen it.
