Evelyn Prentice is married to John Prentice, a prominent criminal lawyer, and they have a young daughter. John's attention has shifted elsewhere, and his wife, feeling alone, is drawn into the company of Lawrence Kennard, a man who presents himself as a poet. What begins as a friendship becomes a romantic involvement, and Kennard, who is not what he claims to be, uses it to pressure Evelyn for money. The situation grows dangerous enough to involve the law, and another woman is accused of a killing connected to the case.
The film was directed by William K. Howard from a screenplay by Lenore J. Coffee, produced by John W. Considine Jr. for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and runs 79 minutes. William Powell and Myrna Loy play the Prentices, with Una Merkel, Rosalind Russell, Isabel Jewell and Harvey Stephens in supporting roles.
Released in November 1934, the film carries a 6.9 rating on IMDb from around 2,000 votes and a 6.5 on TMDB from a much smaller sample of about 31 votes. The wide gap in vote counts means the TMDB figure rests on very few responses compared with the larger IMDb pool.
