Ava
Short description
Ava is a skilled assassin working for a covert organization, traveling the world to carry out kills that others cannot. When one of her assignments goes wrong, she finds herself in danger and decides she wants out of the life. That decision turns her employer against her, and she becomes the target of the very people she once worked for, forcing her to fight for her survival.
The film stars Jessica Chastain in the title role, with John Malkovich as Duke, Common as Michael, Colin Farrell as Simon, Geena Davis as Bobbi and Jess Weixler as Judy. It was directed by Tate Taylor and written by Matthew Newton. It sits between Ma and Breaking News in Yuba County in Taylor's filmography, following The Help, Get On Up and The Girl on the Train. Chastain also produced alongside Kelly Carmichael and Nicolas Chartier, and the production involved 56 credited cast members and 199 credited crew.
Released in July 2020, the film runs 96 minutes. It drew a critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 40 reviews, while audiences on TMDB gave it 5.8 out of 10 from more than 2,800 votes, a modest reception on both sides. Its worldwide box office came to about 3 million dollars, a low figure for an action thriller with this cast.
What's left behind the scenes
- Between takes, Jessica Chastain organized dance parties and group exercise sessions for the crew and cast.
- Matthew Newton did not direct the film due to domestic violence issues and the resulting public outcry, remaining solely as the screenwriter. The lead actress and producer Jessica Chastain urgently needed someone she could trust with the direction, and she contacted Tate Taylor, who fortunately happened to be available.
- After filming was completed, the studio management decided to change the main character's name from Ava to Eve, presumably due to the similarity to the series "Killing Eve" (2018-2022), and the project's title was also changed. Since all relevant scenes had already been shot, some parts had to be reshot or redubbed.
