Seven-year-old Chloe is kept locked inside her home by her father, who warns her that the outside world is filled with dangerous people known as Abnormals. While her father insists that she must remain hidden for her own safety, Chloe is drawn to the world beyond her door. After a mysterious stranger encourages her to explore, she discovers the truth about her own nature and the reality of the threats outside.

The film was co-directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who also co-wrote the screenplay. For Lipovsky, this was the fourth feature he directed, following Tasmanian Devils, Leprechaun: Origins, and Dead Rising: Watchtower. This production marked the first directorial effort for Stein. The cast features Emile Hirsch as the father, Bruce Dern as Mr. Snowcone, and Lexy Kolker as Chloe, alongside Grace Park and Amanda Crew.

A co-production between Canada and the United States, the movie has received generally positive feedback from both viewers and professionals. It holds a rating of 6.7/10 on IMDb based on 45,000 votes and a matching 6.7/10 on TMDB from 1,332 votes. Film critics gave the movie a slightly higher score of 7.2/10 across 83 reviews.
