Short description
In 1920s New York City, Irene Redfield lives a comfortable life in Harlem as the wife of a respected doctor, moving easily in the circles of the Black intellectual elite. A chance encounter at a Manhattan hotel brings her back together with Clare Kendry, a childhood friend she has not seen in years. The two women take very different paths through a society built on racial boundaries: Irene remains within her community, while Clare has chosen to live as white, keeping her origins hidden even from her own husband. Their renewed friendship draws them close again, but the choices each has made weigh on both of their lives.
Passing is the first film directed by Rebecca Hall, who also wrote the screenplay. It is based on Nella Larsen's 1929 novel and was produced by Hall, Forest Whitaker and Margot Hand, with a credited cast of thirty-two and a crew of fifty-six. Tessa Thompson plays Irene, with Ruth Negga as Clare, and André Holland, Alexander Skarsgård, Bill Camp and Gbenga Akinnagbe among the supporting roles.
The film was released in October 2021 and runs just under an hour and forty minutes. It drew more approval from critics, whose rating stands at 7.7 out of 10 across 245 reviews, than from general audiences, rating 6.6 on IMDb from around 18,000 votes and 6.3 on TMDB from over 350 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The novel by Nella Larsen, based on which this film was made, was written in 1929. The title of the film in English ("Passing") contains a reference to African Americans with a light enough skin color to be mistaken for white.
- Director and screenwriter Rebecca Hall dreamed of making this film because of the mystery surrounding the identity of her own maternal grandfather. Her mother knew almost nothing about him because he died when she was very young, but rumors circulated that he had either Native American or African blood. Hall managed to find out that he was African.
- It took Rebecca Hall 10 years to work on the screenplay. She wrote the first draft in 10 days, and spent the rest of the time revising and adding to it.
