A Confucian Confusion

A Confucian Confusion follows a circle of young friends, lovers and business associates in Taipei whose paths cross over the course of about two and a half days, leading each of them to examine the lives and choices they have made. At the centre of the story is Molly, the head of a public relations and advertising agency who comes from a wealthy family. Her fiancé Akeem, heir to a fortune, helps fund the business, and her old university friend Qiqi works beside her as her closest colleague. When a writer the agency promotes is accused of plagiarism, and a colleague leaves the company, Molly begins to question her lifestyle and her values. Around her, a wider group of characters navigates ambition, romance and compromise in a city where business and culture keep colliding.

Edward Yang directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Yen Hung-ya, with Yu Wei-Yen producing. It was Yang's fourth feature, arriving between A Brighter Summer Day and Yi Yi, and it draws on a large ensemble that includes Chen Shiang-Chyi as Qiqi, Joyce Ni Shu-Chun as Molly, Weiming Wang, Wang Bosen, Danny Deng and Elaine Jin. The film runs 129 minutes and blends comedy, drama and romance.

Released in 1994, it holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 2,100 votes and the same average on TMDB, where the vote count is much smaller.
