Tigertail follows Pin-Jui, a Taiwanese factory worker who leaves his homeland, and the woman he loves, for a new life in the United States. What he finds there is a struggle to fit in and a marriage arranged rather than chosen, and over the decades that follow, his relationship with his daughter grows distant. Now at retirement age and facing the prospect of a solitary old age, he looks back on the choices he made and tries to rebuild a connection with his estranged daughter, Angela.
Alan Yang wrote, directed and produced the film, his debut feature, after working primarily in television. The cast is led by Tzi Ma as Grover, the older Pin-Jui, with Christine Ko as Angela, Lee Hong Chi as the young Pin-Jui, Kunjue Li as the young Zhenzhen and Fiona Fu as Zhenzhen.
Tigertail runs 91 minutes and was released in April 2020. It holds a critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 81 reviews, while audiences give it 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB, a modest but consistent reception across critics and viewers alike.
