Beth, a widow, is left alone in the lakeside house her husband built for her after his sudden death. She tries to hold herself together, but nightmares and disturbing visions of a presence in the house begin to haunt her nights, while daylight brings no explanation. Against her friends' advice, she starts going through his belongings in search of answers, and what she finds points to secrets and a mystery she is determined to resolve.
David Bruckner directed the film from a screenplay by Luke Piotrowski and Ben Collins. It is the fourth feature in the directing credits listed for Bruckner, arriving between The Ritual and Hellraiser. Rebecca Hall plays Beth, with Sarah Goldberg, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Evan Jonigkeit, Stacy Martin and David Abeles among the cast. David S. Goyer, Keith Levine and John Zois served as producers.
Made for a budget of 12 million US dollars, the film took about 15 million US dollars worldwide, a modest return on its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from 77,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from 1,396 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 209 reviews places professional assessment noticeably above the audience scores on both sites.
