El Chicano

El Chicano is a drama set in East Los Angeles, where twin brothers grow up hearing stories of a masked vigilante who punishes those the law cannot touch. As adults they take separate paths: one becomes a gang leader, the other joins the police. Diego, an LAPD detective, finds himself investigating a Mexican drug cartel and discovers connections to his brother's presumed suicide, along with a territorial conflict threatening his neighborhood. Torn between following procedure and pursuing his own justice, he revives the masked legend of his childhood and takes violent action to defend his community and avenge his brother.

The film was released in May 2019, directed by Ben Hernandez Bray, who wrote the screenplay with Joe Carnahan. It is the first feature Bray directed. Joe Carnahan, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Frank Grillo produced through WarParty Films. Raúl Castillo plays Diego and his brother Pedro, with Aimee Garcia as Vanessa, Jose Pablo Cantillo as Detective Martinez, David Castañeda as Shotgun, Marco Rodríguez as Jesus and Sal Lopez as El Gallo; twenty cast members are credited in total.

The film runs 148 minutes and is classified as a drama in the United States. It earned about 1 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from roughly 1,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from 88 votes, so the smaller TMDB sample is more favorable than the larger IMDb one.
