Playing with Fire
Short description
Playing with Fire follows Jake Carson, a strict fire superintendent, and his elite crew of smokejumpers. After they rescue three siblings from the path of a raging forest fire, they discover the children's parents cannot be located. The firefighters are forced to look after the kids themselves, and their carefully ordered lives, work and station are turned upside down. The children prove as wild and unpredictable as the fires the men are trained to fight.
Andy Fickman directed the film, which he made between Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and Christmas...Again?!, working from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Dan Ewen. John Cena leads as Jake, with Keegan-Michael Key, John Leguizamo and Tyler Mane as his fellow firefighters, and Brianna Hildebrand, Christian Convery and Finley Rose Slater as the children. Todd Garner and Sean Robins produced; Paramount, Nickelodeon Movies, Walden Media and Broken Road Productions were behind it.
Released in November 2019, the family comedy runs 96 minutes. On a budget of about 30 million dollars, it took in roughly 69 million worldwide. Audience opinion splits by platform: on IMDb it holds 5.2 out of 10 from around 18,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from 771. A critics' score of 4.1 from 76 reviews places it below even the modest IMDb audience figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- The fire station was filmed at the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve in Canada, just north of Vancouver.
- Filming lasted 42 days.
- The biggest challenge was working on the scenes with open fire, which were filmed both on location and in a studio. The forest cabin had to be built and burned to the ground twice.
