Short description
RoboCop 2 continues the story of Detroit's cyborg police officer, built from the remains of the murdered officer Murphy. The city is in crisis: violent crime is rampant, the police force is largely absent, and a new drug called Nuke is spreading through the streets. The drug trade is run by Cain, a charismatic and unstable leader, while the megacorporation OCP, which created RoboCop, pursues its own plans for the city and for a successor to its law enforcement unit. RoboCop and his partner, Officer Anne Lewis, find themselves caught between the drug gangs and the corporation's ambitions.
The film was directed by Irvin Kershner, whose earlier work includes Raid on Entebbe, Eyes of Laura Mars, The Empire Strikes Back and Never Say Never Again. Peter Weller returns as RoboCop, with Nancy Allen as Lewis, Tom Noonan as Cain, Belinda Bauer as Dr. Juliette Faxx, Willard E. Pugh as Mayor Kuzak and Dan O'Herlihy as the OCP executive known as the Old Man. Frank Miller and Walon Green wrote the screenplay, and Jon Davison produced.
Made by Orion Pictures for about 35 million dollars, the film took in roughly 46 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a major science-fiction release. On IMDb it holds 5.8 from around 100,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of about 2,200 voters. A critics' score of 5.1 from 137 reviews places it below even the mixed audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- Frank Miller came to the set every day, even though his presence wasn't required.
- The directing job was offered to Norwegian director Nils Gaup, but he declined it.
- The container used to hold the 'Newk' drug is actually a standard contact lens case.
- Although the producers really liked Frank Miller's script, they soon realized that it was almost impossible to film. Therefore, it was significantly reworked; its final version has little in common with Miller's original concept. In 2003, a comic book titled "Frank Miller's RoboCop" was created based on Miller's script.
- Peter Weller was extremely dissatisfied with the film's screenplay and, after filming, promised to never again appear in a movie as RoboCop.
- Director Irvin Kershner replaced Tim Hunter, who left the project during pre-production due to creative differences.
- The OCP flags are Nazi flags with the OCP logo instead of the swastika.
- Miniature models of the cyborgs were used in most of the battle scenes with RoboCop and RoboCain. For close-ups, a head and torso weighing 362 kilograms were built.
