A three-person crew departs on a two-year mission to Mars. Shortly after launch, they discover an unconscious technician aboard, a man who was not part of the flight. With no possibility of turning back, the astronauts find that the ship's life-support systems have been damaged, and resources will not stretch far enough for everyone. A medical researcher and her commander take opposing positions on how to handle the situation, while the biologist on the crew is caught between them.
Joe Penna directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Ryan Morrison, following their earlier collaboration on Arctic. Anna Kendrick plays the researcher Zoe Levenson, with Toni Collette as Captain Marina Barnett, Daniel Dae Kim as the biologist David Kim, and Shamier Anderson as the unintended passenger Michael Adams. The film was produced across Germany and the United States on a budget of about 10 million dollars, and runs 116 minutes.
Among general audiences, the film holds a 5.7 rating on IMDb from roughly 56,000 votes, and a 6 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 110 reviews places critical opinion somewhat above the broader audience response. Its modest budget and limited theatrical profile are consistent with a contained science-fiction drama built around a small ensemble rather than large-scale spectacle.
