The Sea Beast
Short description
A young stowaway named Maisie Brumble hides aboard a ship belonging to Jacob Holland, a celebrated hunter of sea monsters. Together they set out across waters no map has recorded, and their voyage ends up changing the course of history. The animated adventure, released in June 2022, runs 115 minutes and blends action, fantasy and family themes.
Chris Williams directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nell Benjamin, and he also produced alongside Jed Schlanger. It stands as the third film he directed, following Bolt in 2008 and Big Hero 6 in 2014. The voice cast is led by Karl Urban as Jacob, Zaris-Angel Hator as Maisie, Jared Harris as Captain Crow and Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Sarah Sharpe, with 24 credited cast members and 191 credited crew.
Produced by Netflix in the United States, the film drew a critics' rating of 7.7 out of 10 from 111 reviews, while audiences gave it 7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 65,000 votes and 7.3 out of 10 on TMDB from 1,781 votes. The pattern suggests broad approval across both professional and general viewers, with critics somewhat warmer than the voting public.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is one of the few animated films where a sailing ship is depicted with incredible accuracy. Throughout the film, the correct commands are given on the ship "the Inevitable," and their correct execution is shown, albeit in a modern context. It shows, in particular, how the ship is managed by the skipper, Mrs. Merino, carrying out the orders of Captain Crow.
