Brigham Young

Brigham Young is a 1940 historical Western from 20th Century Fox, directed by Henry Hathaway. Set in the mid-1840s, it follows the Mormon community after the killing of their founder, Joseph Smith, as Brigham Young takes over its leadership and leads his people westward across the Rocky Mountains toward a new home in the Salt Lake Valley. Alongside the historical account, the story centres on two fictional characters, Jonathan Kent and Zina Webb, and the difficulties they meet during the journey.

Tyrone Power plays Jonathan Kent and Linda Darnell plays Zina Webb, with Dean Jagger as Brigham Young. Brian Donlevy, Jane Darwell and John Carradine appear among the large credited cast of 61. The screenplay was written by Louis Bromfield and Lamar Trotti, and Darryl F. Zanuck produced. The film came early in Hathaway's directing career, the second of the 18 features he directed, following Peter Ibbetson in 1935 and preceding The House on 92nd Street in 1945.

Released on 27 September 1940, it runs 114 minutes and was made for a budget of three million dollars. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from around 1,200 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 4.6 from a much smaller number of votes.
