Virginia City

Virginia City is a Western set in 1864, during the final phase of the American Civil War. Union intelligence officer Kerry Bradford escapes from a Confederate prison and sets out to stop a shipment of five million dollars in gold being sent to support the Confederate cause. He is pursued and opposed by Vance Irby, a Southern officer with a plan of his own, and by the bandit John Murrell, who wants the gold for himself. Julia Hayne, a saloon singer secretly working for the South, becomes part of the struggle as she is asked to help trap Bradford.

Michael Curtiz directed the film, the fourteenth of the twenty-five features he made in chronological order, arriving between Santa Fe Trail and Yankee Doodle Dandy. Robert Buckner wrote the screenplay. Errol Flynn stars as Bradford, with Miriam Hopkins as Julia Hayne, Randolph Scott as Irby and Humphrey Bogart as Murrell, among a credited cast of seventy-three that also includes Frank McHugh and Alan Hale. Warner Bros. Pictures produced it on a budget of one million dollars, and it took two million dollars at the worldwide box office.

The film runs 121 minutes and mixes action, romance and Western elements. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 40 votes, a modest figure that suggests a mixed response from those who have recorded an opinion there.
