Assunta Patanè, a young Sicilian woman, is abducted by mistake by the associates of Vincenzo Macaluso, a womanising local man. She is secretly drawn to him and lets herself be seduced, but wakes the next morning to find he has fled abroad to escape the consequences. With no father or brothers to defend her, Assunta must act for herself. She leaves Sicily for London, carrying a pistol and intending to kill Vincenzo, who is working in a pizzeria there.
Mario Monicelli directed this Italian-British comedy drama, the eighth of the sixteen films he directed in chronological order, following The Queens and preceding Oh, Grandmother's Dead. Rodolfo Sonego and Luigi Magni wrote the screenplay, and Gianni Hecht Lucari produced it for Documento Film. Monica Vitti plays Assunta, with Stanley Baker as Dr. Tom Osborne, Carlo Giuffrè as Vincenzo, and Corin Redgrave and Anthony Booth in supporting roles.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from around 1,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from roughly 154 votes. The two audience scores are close to each other, indicating a modest but fairly steady level of approval.
