The Vast of Night

Set in a small New Mexico town in the late 1950s, The Vast of Night follows Fay Crocker, a telephone switchboard operator, and Everett, a charismatic radio DJ, over the course of a single night. The two teenagers, who share an interest in electronics and broadcasting, pick up an unusual audio frequency over the airwaves. As most of the town gathers for a high school basketball game, Fay and Everett try to trace where the signal comes from, drawing them into an investigation that touches the future of their community.

The film is the directorial debut of Andrew Patterson, who also produced it with Adam Dietrich and Melissa Kirkendall. Sierra McCormick and Jake Horowitz lead a credited cast of thirty, with Gail Cronauer, Bruce Davis, Cheyenne Barton and Mark Banik among the supporting players. Released in 2019, it runs 91 minutes.

Audience responses were moderately positive, with an IMDb rating of 6.7 from over 43,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.6 from roughly 1,200 votes. Critics rated it higher, at 7.8 from 248 reviews, indicating stronger approval among reviewers than among general viewers. Patterson's next feature, The Rivals of Amziah King, followed in 2026.
