This production of the ninth opera by Verdi explores moral uncertainty and introspective themes set against a grand historical backdrop. The story requires performers to balance confidence and passion with psychological nuance and subtle expression.
Directed by Patrizia Carmine, this Italian music film was produced by RAI and Teatro alla Scala. It was released on December 7, 2018, with a runtime of 120 minutes. The screenplay was written by Temistocle Solera. The cast features Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role of Attila, alongside Saioa Hernández as Odabella, Fabio Sartori as Foresto, George Petean as Ezio, Francesco Pittari as Uldino, and Gianluca Burato as Papa Leone.
The project was part of a broader exploration of early works by Verdi led by musical director Riccardo Chailly. This followed a production of Giovanna d'Arco and preceded Macbeth. The project also marked a continued partnership between Chailly and creative director Davide Livermore, who had previously collaborated on a production of Don Pasquale for La Scala.
