Ready or Not
Short description
Grace has just married into the wealthy Le Domas family, and on her wedding night she learns that joining the clan comes with a tradition she was not told about. What begins as a game turns into a hunt through the family's large estate, and she has to survive until morning while her new in-laws pursue her.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the film, working from a screenplay by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. It sits in the middle of the directing pair's run of horror features, following V/H/S, Devil's Due and Southbound, and preceding the two Scream films, Abigail, Ready or Not: Here I Come and The Mummy 4. Samara Weaving plays Grace, with Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell and Melanie Scrofano among the cast.
Made for about six million dollars, the film took in roughly fifty-eight million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 233,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 from a much smaller set of ratings. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 325 reviews places it slightly above the audience score on IMDb.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film crew had only five candelabras available, so they had to constantly move them to the locations where filming was currently taking place.
- The costume designer created 17 different versions of Grace's wedding dress to show how events impact clothing.
- The lead actress, Samara Weaving, had to be taught to drive a car, or at least look like she was actually driving.
- Almost 200 names for fictional board games were suggested for the corresponding scene, but the legal department rejected all but 8 of them.
- Grace’s yellow sneakers had to be hand-painted, as the company no longer manufactures that model in yellow.
- Filming took place at Casa Loma—a Neo-Gothic castle from the early 20th century in Toronto, Canada. The castle is state-protected, so candles were prohibited and many pieces of furniture could not be touched.
- The nail that pierced Grace's hand was a product of computer technology.
