Short description

Misbehaviour is set in London in 1970, when the Miss World beauty pageant was one of the most-watched television events on the planet. Presented by American comedian Bob Hope, the contest drew a global audience in the tens of millions. Against this backdrop, a group of women from the newly formed Women's Liberation Movement decided to act. Sally Alexander, frustrated by the way women were treated in society, joined forces with the rebellious Jo Robinson and others to disrupt the live broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall. Their protest brought the movement sudden public attention, and when the show continued, the result itself proved controversial, overturning expectations about which contestant would take the crown.

Philippa Lowthorpe directed the film, which sits between Swallows and Amazons and H Is for Hawk in her filmography. Rebecca Frayn and Gaby Chiappe wrote the screenplay, with Suzanne Mackie and Sarah Wheale producing. Keira Knightley plays Sally Alexander, Gugu Mbatha-Raw appears as Jennifer Hosten, Miss Grenada, and Jessie Buckley plays Jo Robinson. Keeley Hawes, Phyllis Logan and Lesley Manville round out the principal cast among 57 credited performers.

Released in March 2020, the British production earned about 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 from roughly 12,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 from just over 300 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.7 from 104 reviews, slightly above the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The plot is based on a true story that took place at the Miss World contest in London in 1970.
  • Despite what is shown in the film, in reality the perpetrators intended to start protests when the Miss World candidates were on stage. However, they changed their plans due to Bob Hope's misogynistic jokes and began throwing 'flour bombs' at that very moment.
