The Invisible Man
Short description
Cecilia Kass escapes a violent relationship with a wealthy scientist, only to later learn that he has committed suicide and left her a portion of his fortune. Despite the news, she suspects the death was staged and that her former partner is still alive. As dangerous accidents begin to threaten her and those close to her, Cecilia struggles to convince others that she is being hunted by an invisible presence.
Written and directed by Leigh Whannell, this film is the third in the director's chronological list of feature films, following Insidious: Chapter 3 and Upgrade, and preceding Wolf Man. The movie stars Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Michael Dorman, Harriet Dyer, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. A joint production from the United States and Australia involving Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, the project had a budget of 7 million USD and earned 144 million USD worldwide.
The film has a rating of 7.1/10 on IMDb based on 282,000 votes and a matching 7.1/10 on TMDB from 6,470 votes. Film critics provided a higher rating of 7.8/10 across 424 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Originally, the shower scene included a shot of a handprint on the shower door (the same one used in the trailer and on the Blu-ray/DVD cover), but it was removed because the director decided that Cecilia discovering a bottle of pills was scary enough.
- When working on the Invisible Man, Lee Whannell and his team used a combination of old techniques and the latest advancements in computer graphics.
- Michael Dorman specifically wore costumes a couple of sizes too small for his build to create the image of Tom.
- The interior of the house was filmed in four different homes. For example, Adrian's bedroom, played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, was filmed in the living room of a house in Sydney.
- The heroine's name, Cecilia, comes from the Latin 'Caecus', meaning blind or eyeless, thus she cannot see the Invisible Man.
- Pine trees generally do not grow in Australia, and since the film was shot there, the episode in which Elizabeth Moss's character runs into the night and gets lost among the pines had to be filmed in a specially planted forest area where pines are grown for subsequent use in the furniture industry and for Christmas holidays.
- Lee Whannell wanted the film's credits to be simple, yet highly meaningful. The film shows waves crashing onto the shore, and the credits appear briefly before being washed away by the sea. The director came up with the idea for these credits directly on set, and only later learned that achieving realism in computer graphics is most difficult precisely when depicting water.
- Finding locations in Australia that could pass for the United States proved to be a difficult task. It was particularly challenging to find a suburban house for James, played by Aldis Hodge. Even his mailbox had to be ordered by mail from the United States.
