The Wild Goose Lake follows Zhou Zenong, the head of a small motorcycle theft gang in China. During a violent clash with a rival group, he accidentally kills a policeman, which turns both the authorities and his fellow criminals against him. Wounded and on the run, he crosses paths with Liu Aiai, a woman who may be able to help him escape or may be leading him into a trap. Pursued by gang members and a police operation that seems to cover the whole city, Zhou has to weigh what he is willing to sacrifice, both for this stranger and for the family he left behind.
The film is a crime drama directed and written by Diao Yinan, his second feature after Black Coal, Thin Ice. Hu Ge plays Zhou, with Gwei Lun-mei as Liu Aiai and Liao Fan as Captain Liu, among a credited cast of 28. It was produced by Li Li, Shen Yang and Stanley Tong, and made as a co-production between China and France.
Released in late 2019, the film holds a critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 81 reviews, while on TMDB it has a 6.6 out of 10 from 384 votes, a gap suggesting critics responded to it more warmly than general viewers did.
