Mama Weed

Mama Weed is a French-Belgian crime comedy about Patience Portefeux, a French-Arabic interpreter who works for a Paris drug squad translating wiretapped phone conversations. The pay is low and the work is insecure, and when financial pressure mounts over the care of her mother, Patience learns of a large shipment of cannabis bound for the city. Instead of staying on the side of the law, she interferes with the seizure and keeps the drugs, then builds her own trafficking operation while continuing to report to the police unit that is hunting her.

Isabelle Huppert plays Patience, with Liliane Rovère as her mother, Hippolyte Girardot as Philippe, Iris Bry as her daughter Hortense, and Farida Ouchani as Kadidja. Jean-Paul Salomé directed and wrote the screenplay, working with producers Jean-Baptiste Dupont and Kristina Larsen. The film followed his earlier features Arsène Lupin, Female Agents and The Chameleon, and came before La Syndicaliste and The Money Maker.

Released in September 2020, it runs 104 minutes. Made for about 5 million dollars, it took in roughly the same amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 rating from around 4,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from 289 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 38 reviews puts professional response somewhat above the audience scores on both platforms.
