Saint Maud

Saint Maud follows a young private nurse named Maud who has recently converted to a fervent form of Christianity. She takes a job caring for Amanda, a former dancer now confined to a large house by a chronic illness. Amanda at first seems amused by her pious, unobtrusive caregiver, and Maud in turn becomes absorbed in her patient. A meeting with a former colleague, however, raises questions about Maud's past, and her sense that she receives direct guidance from God hardens into the conviction that she has been sent to Amanda for a purpose beyond nursing. What begins as ordinary caregiving turns into a mission she believes is a matter of salvation.

The film is the feature debut of British writer-director Rose Glass, who also wrote the screenplay; her second feature, Love Lies Bleeding, followed in 2024. Morfydd Clark plays Maud and Jennifer Ehle plays Amanda, with supporting turns from Lily Frazer, Lily Knight, Rosie Sansom and Caoilfhionn Dunne. It was produced by Andrea Cornwell and Oliver Kassman for Film4, the BFI and Escape Plan, and runs 85 minutes.

Released in the United Kingdom in October 2020, the film took about 2 million dollars worldwide. Its critical standing is considerably stronger than its commercial one: on IMDb it holds 8 out of 10 from 193 reviews, while on TMDB audience voters give it 6.5 out of 10 from 933 votes.
