Short description
Evan McCauley struggles with mysterious memories and skills that lead him to believe he is suffering from a mental illness. His life changes when he is contacted by a secret society of individuals who remember their previous incarnations. Upon discovering that his visions are actually recollections of past lives, Evan joins this group to uncover secrets buried in his history. Together, they must race against time to stop a member of their own kind from destroying humanity.
This action-adventure science fiction thriller was directed by Antoine Fuqua, marking the 14th film in his career, following The Equalizer 2 and preceding The Guilty. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Cookson, Jason Mantzoukas, Rupert Friend, and Toby Jones. Produced by Paramount and other companies, the project featured a credited cast of 40 people and a crew of 147.
The film received mixed reactions from viewers and critics. On IMDb, it holds a 5.5 rating based on 59,047 votes, while on TMDB, it has a higher score of 6.6 from 2,219 votes. These audience figures contrast with a lower rating of 4.1 from 83 film critics.
What's left behind the scenes
- The plot is based on Eric Michael Kranz's novel "The Reincarnationist Papers" (2009). The author was unable to convince any literary agents to pitch the book to Hollywood, so he offered a commission on the first page of its literary edition to anyone who could interest Hollywood studios in the novel. After a year and a half, he received an email from a director's assistant in Hollywood who had come across the novel in Nepal. Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to adapt it into a film in 2017.
- Evan is asked: "Which of these items belong to you?" The same question is asked to potential reincarnations of the Dalai Lama.
- Between the 12th and 13th minutes, while Mark Wahlberg's character is forging a Japanese sword, an Asian person is shown making a katana in parallel, but their clothing and hairstyle are more Chinese than Japanese.
