Compartment No. 6

Compartment No. 6 follows Laura, a Finnish student who leaves Moscow and boards a train bound for the Arctic port of Murmansk, partly to put a troubled romance behind her. She expects a quiet journey, but she is placed in a small sleeper compartment with Lyokha, a Russian miner whose blunt, noisy manner clashes with her reserve. Over the long trip north, the two strangers, who share almost nothing, are forced to get along in close quarters, and their uneasy companionship slowly shifts into something more open.

The film is directed by Juho Kuosmanen and written by Kuosmanen, Livia Ulman and Andris Feldmanis. It is his second fiction feature, following The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki. Seidi Haarla plays Laura, with Yuriy Borisov as Lyokha and supporting turns from Dinara Drukarova, Yuliya Aug, Lidiya Kostina and Tomi Alatalo. The production involved companies in Russia, Germany, Finland and Estonia and was made for around two million dollars, with worldwide box office of roughly three million.

Audience response has been positive: on IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from about 18,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from roughly 480 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 121 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
