Tom Horn is a western set in Wyoming around the turn of the twentieth century. Its central figure is a former army scout whose name is tied to the capture of the Apache leader Geronimo. Arriving in the territory looking for work that suits his tracking skills, he is hired by a group of cattlemen to deal with rustlers. He does the job, but the killing of a boy brings him to trial, and the skills that made his reputation prove useless against the ambitions of the ranchers and the corrupt officials around them. As the old West gives way to settled society, he finds himself abandoned by those who once sought his help.
The film was directed by William Wiard from a screenplay by Thomas McGuane and Bud Shrake, and produced by Fred Weintraub. Steve McQueen plays Tom Horn, heading a cast of 69 credited performers that includes Linda Evans, Richard Farnsworth, Billy Green Bush, Slim Pickens and Peter Canon. Made for about 3 million dollars, it took roughly 9 million worldwide, a return well ahead of its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 6,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from a much smaller 137 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 from eight reviews places it close to the audience score on IMDb.
