Set in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, Dawn of War follows an Estonian intelligence officer, Feliks Kangur. When a senior officer in the service is killed, and with the German-Soviet pact looming over the region, Kangur is assigned to identify a Soviet double agent operating inside Estonian ranks. The investigation draws him into state secrets and into the life of Maria Dubrawska, a woman from Poland, while the country's future hangs on what he uncovers.
The film is a thriller directed by Margus Paju, working from a screenplay he wrote with Eriikka Etholén-Paju, Tiit Aleksejev and Tom Abrams. It is his second feature, following Secret Society of Souptown in 2015. Priit Võigemast leads as Kangur, with Kaspars Znotiņš, Agnese Budovska, Elmo Nüganen, Johan Kristjan Aimla and Doris Tislar among the main cast; 59 cast members and 207 crew members are credited. The production was a co-venture between Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Estonia, made by Taska Film, Solar Films, Nafta and INSCRIPT on a budget of about 3 million USD.
Released on 6 October 2020, the film runs 99 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 1,400 votes, while on TMDB its rating stands at 6.1 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 17 votes.
