Short description

Set in London, this comedy-drama follows Mike, a young man who begins working at a public bathhouse. He becomes infatuated with Susan, an attractive female employee. As Mike attempts to win her affection, he struggles with jealousy over her relationships with other men, including a swimming instructor. His efforts to intervene in her romantic life eventually lead to a tragic conclusion.

The film was directed by Jerzy Skolimowski, appearing as the second entry in a chronology that includes The Departure and The Shout. The screenplay was written by Skolimowski alongside Jerzy Gruza and Bolesław Sulik. The cast features John Moulder-Brown as Mike and Jane Asher as Susan, with Karl Michael Vogler playing the gym teacher. Other credited roles include Christopher Sandford, Diana Dors, and Louise Martini, contributing to a total credited cast of 25.

The production was a joint effort between the United Kingdom and Germany through Maran Film and Kettledrum-Lownes Productions. Audience reception has been generally positive, with a rating of 7.1 on IMDb based on 8,600 votes and a 7 on TMDB from 248 votes. Film critics provided a slightly higher assessment, giving the movie a rating of 7.8 based on 20 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The telephone booth that Mike crashes into is the same one that appeared in the mid-1960s Doctor Who franchise films starring Peter Cushing.
  • At the end of the film, Susan speaks on the phone with Chris, played by Christopher Sandford. She is wearing pantyhose, although she was previously shown taking them off.
  • The film is set in the UK, but filming there lasted only seven days. The rest of the time, the filmmakers worked in Munich. Jane Asher later recalled how she and John Maulder-Brown (who played Susan and Mike, respectively) collaborated to rewrite their lines to ensure the audience would have no doubt that the action took place in the UK. They even improvised some scenes and lines, such as the one regarding the defacement of government property.
  • Director and screenwriter Jerzy Skolimowski wrote the script based on a newspaper clipping about a young man who killed a girl. He became curious about what could drive a person to commit such a terrible act.
  • Many years after the film was completed, Jane Asher revealed that during production, she spent every evening rewriting her character's lines for the scenes scheduled to be filmed the following day.
