Ghost Stories

Ghost Stories is an Indian horror anthology built around four separate short films. The segments deal with unsettling things happening close to home: the dead who will not stay dead, children who are not as harmless as they appear, rural communities turning predatory, and a young bride confronting an odd trait in her husband's family. Each story stands on its own, with its own characters and setting, united by the horror genre rather than by a single continuing plot.

The anthology brings together four directors: Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee and Anurag Kashyap. For all four, it followed their earlier collaboration on Lust Stories, and it sits between that project and their later features in each of their careers. Zoya Akhtar shares screenplay credit with Dibakar Banerjee and Avinash Sampath, and Ashi Dua Sara produced. The large credited cast of twenty includes Janhvi Kapoor, Surekha Sikri and Vijay Varma in Akhtar's segment, and Sobhita Dhulipala in Kashyap's.

Released in 2020, the film runs 144 minutes. Audience response has been lukewarm: on IMDb it holds 4.5 out of 10 from roughly 6,300 votes, and on TMDB 5.2 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 88 votes. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 11 reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than above them, suggesting broad agreement that the anthology met neither camp's expectations.
