Tumbbad is a fantasy horror film set in rural India in the early twentieth century. Vinayak, the illegitimate son of the local lord, grows up near the village of Tumbbad, a place soaked by constant rain, where his family tends to a sleeping ancestress whose care is bound up with the fate of a long-hidden family treasure. The story follows Vinayak from childhood, when he first glimpses the fortune he believes is buried nearby, into adulthood, as his pursuit of it hardens into an obsession that spans decades and draws him back to the place his family once fled.
Rahi Anil Barve directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay he wrote with Anand Gandhi and Adesh Prasad. It was produced by Aanand L. Rai, Sohum Shah and Amita Shah. Sohum Shah plays the adult Vinayak, with Dhundiraj Prabhakar Jogalekar as the younger Vinayak, Jyoti Malshe as his mother, Rudra Soni as Sadashiv, Mohammad Samad as Pandurang, and Harsh K. as Hastar. Barve went on to direct Mayasabha: The Hall of Illusion and Mann-Pishach, both dated 2026.
The film runs 113 minutes and was made across Indian and Swedish production companies. On IMDb it holds 8.2 out of 10 from more than 56,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.6 from a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 30 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broad agreement on its merits.
