The Long Walk
Short description
Set in a dystopian version of the United States under a totalitatian regime, this horror thriller follows a group of teenage boys forced into a brutal annual walking competition. Participants must maintain a constant minimum speed without stopping; those who fail to do so receive warnings, and after three infractions, they are executed. The contest continues until only one person remains alive to claim the prize. Raymond Garraty is among the contestants, struggling to survive while forming a bond with another participant, Peter McVries.
Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film followed his previous work including The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and precedes The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The screenplay was written by JT Mollner and Stephen King. The cast features Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Ben Wang, Tut Nyuot, and Charlie Plummer.
Produced by Lionsgate and other companies with a budget of 20 million USD, the movie earned 63 million USD at the worldwide box office. It holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb from 104,000 votes and a 6.9 rating on TMDB from 1,940 votes. Film critics gave the movie a higher score of 7.7 based on 294 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- In 1988, George Romero first attempted to adapt Stephen King's novel for the screen, and in 2007, Frank Darabont acquired the rights to a film adaptation of the book. In 2019, director André Øvredal and screenwriter James Vanderbilt joined the efforts to adapt the book. In November 2023, Øvredal stepped down from the project, and Francis Lawrence was appointed as the new director.
