A beautiful but headstrong peasant woman named Isabella lives in Naples, where she meets Prince Rodrigo Fernandez, an irritable Spanish nobleman. The King of Spain has ordered Rodrigo to pick a bride from among seven Italian princesses, yet the prince finds himself drawn to Isabella instead. The match is not a simple one: both are stubborn, and the assembled princesses are still waiting for the prince to make his choice. The tale blends comedy, fantasy and romance, with witches and saints playing a part in Isabella's efforts to win the man she wants.
Francesco Rosi directed the film, which came after The Swindlers and Salvatore Giuliano and before Carmen in his filmography. Sophia Loren plays Isabella, Omar Sharif plays Prince Rodrigo, and the cast also includes Georges Wilson, Leslie French, Dolores del Río and Marina Malfatti. Tonino Guerra, Raffaele La Capria and Giuseppe Patroni Griffi wrote the screenplay, and Carlo Ponti produced. The Italian-French co-production runs 104 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 1,600 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. That gap reflects a modest but steady level of viewer interest over the decades rather than any broad acclaim.
