Short description
Trevor Garfield is a dedicated Brooklyn high school teacher who refuses to give up on students in a school where violence has become routine. After a confrontation with a student, he is stabbed and left badly injured. Fifteen months later he moves to California and returns to teaching as a substitute, hoping for a fresh start. His new school proves just as troubled, with hostile students and gang tensions, and Garfield is no longer willing to be a victim.
Kevin Reynolds directed the film, which he made after Waterworld and before The Count of Monte Cristo. Scott Yagemann wrote the screenplay, and Samuel L. Jackson plays Trevor, with John Heard as Childress, Kelly Rowan as Ellen, Clifton Collins Jr. as Cesar, Tony Plana as Garcia and Karina Arroyave as Rita. The large credited cast and crew reflect a sizeable production backed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Icon Productions.
The film was released in July 1997 and runs 119 minutes. Made for about 20 million dollars, it returned roughly 6 million worldwide, a weak result. On IMDb it holds 5.8, and on TMDB 6.7 from about 670 votes; a critics' rating of 5.2 from 27 reviews places critical response below audience response.

- The original screenplay was written in 1995 by Scott Yagemann, who himself worked as a substitute teacher in Los Angeles for seven years. He wrote the script after a student he had transferred to his school began threatening Yagemann and his family. Yagemann reported the threats to the authorities, and the student was taken into custody. Approximately a week later, he was called as a witness to court, where the same student was being tried for a knife attack on a teacher committed a year earlier. Yagemann was angered because he had not been told about such details of the student's biography before, and he wrote this screenplay. According to him, 90% of the film's material is based on events that actually happened to him personally and to other teachers.
