Double Happiness

Double Happiness is a Canadian comedy-drama about Jade Li, a Chinese Canadian woman in her twenties living in Vancouver. Her parents expect her to marry a suitable Chinese man, while she is drawn to Mark, a white university student. Jade works as an actress between auditions and family obligations, pretending to fit the picture her parents have of a dutiful daughter while pursuing a life of her own. The film follows the widening gap between those two expectations and the strain it puts on her relationships at home.

The film was released in 1994 and runs 87 minutes. It was directed by Mina Shum, who also wrote the screenplay, and it was her first feature. Sandra Oh plays Jade, with Stephen Chang, Alannah Ong and Frances You as her family, and Callum Keith Rennie as Mark; 24 performers are credited. Produced with backing from Téléfilm Canada, the National Film Board and Fine Line Features, it is set in Vancouver's Chinese Canadian community.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.1/10 from around 1,300 votes, while on TMDB the rating is 6.5/10 from a much smaller number of votes. Shum went on to direct One Nine and Whatcha Want in later decades, making this the earliest of the three features listed in her filmography.
