A family attends a taping of The Banana Splits, the children's television show featuring a group of costumed animal characters. The occasion is meant to be a birthday treat for a boy named Harley and an ordinary workday for Rebecca, the show's producer. Instead, events at the studio take a violent turn, and people begin dying. Harley, his mother Beth and the friends they make there try to get out alive. The film is a comedy horror thriller that reworks the Hanna-Barbera children's property into a survival story about a studio visit gone wrong.
Danishka Esterhazy directed, working from a screenplay by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, with Adam Friedlander producing. It was Esterhazy's fourth feature, following Amarantos, Call and Level 16. Finlay Wojtak-Hissong plays Harley, Maria Nash plays Zoe, and Dani Kind plays Beth. Eric Bauza provides the voices of the four animal characters, with Terry Sauls and Brandon Vraagom among the credited performers. The cast totals 23 people.
The film runs 89 minutes and was released in September 2019, a production of Warner Bros. Pictures, Hanna-Barbera Productions, Blue Ice Pictures and Blue Ribbon Content, shot across Canada, the United States and South Africa. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 272 votes. That score indicates a moderately positive response from a modest number of viewers rather than a broad consensus.
