The Heist of the Century
Short description
This crime comedy thriller focuses on a famous 2006 robbery at the Banco Rio in the Acassuso district of Buenos Aires, Argentina. To steal millions in valuables and cash, a group of thieves uses a deceptive strategy, combining a visible hostage situation and police negotiations with a secret operation to empty safety deposit boxes via the city's sewer system.
Directed by Ariel Winograd, the film followed his 2019 project Tod@s Caen. The cast features Guillermo Francella, Diego Peretti, Luis Luque, Pablo Rago, Rafael Ferro, and Mariano Argento. The production was a collaboration between companies from Argentina and the United States, including INCAA, Telefe, Viacom International Inc., and AZ Films.
The movie earned 8 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has been well received by viewers, holding a 7.1 rating on IMDb from 12,000 votes and a 7.7 rating on TMDB from 867 votes. These audience scores are slightly higher than the 7 rating provided by film critics.
What's left behind the scenes
- In reality, when police special forces stormed the bank building, seven robbers watched the events unfold on a television screen during a live broadcast from the scene. At that moment, they were counting their loot and eating pizza. Or, at least, they believed they were watching a live broadcast. Television crews were broadcasting with a 30-minute delay, as everyone assumed the criminals were still inside the building and did not want to spook them prematurely. The leaders of the police operation hoped to mislead the robbers in this way.
- In reality, the shares the robbers divided the “loot” into were not equal. Those who joined the robbers last received less, but this was agreed upon beforehand, so no one voiced any complaints.
- The plot is based on the story of the real robbery of the "Rio de Acassuso" bank in Buenos Aires on January 13, 2006.
